An inexperienced team needs more *experience* how would not going to a comp remedy that? This might make sense on the open circuit, but at university the level increases from competition to competition, so the first one is the best to go to with an inexperienced team, the gap will just grow!

Last year Oxford beginners did not come along to Warwick, subsequently lots more dropped out than usual. I think going to a comp with little experience is a bit scary, but also very exciting and a lot of people get hooked :).
