The way I heard it, the decision had nothing to do with the captain and a load of the team (~6 individuals at last count, affecting ~10 partnerships) having a clash with the formation team going to the Worlds.
The decision was instead made on the basis of giving everyone on a fairly inexperienced team more preparation time before facing the rest of you on the circuit - we're doing an open circuit comp around the same time, attendance optional again.
I understood that the coaches and captain had made the decision, and there wasn't much deciding left to do - but the never-ending cambridge politic may yet have more wheels left to turn. The team is part of the club, who may decide differently at an upcoming committee meeting - although I think it's more likely that they will leave the decision to the captain and coaches.
I'm, personally, undecided as to the strategic value of the CUDT not attending in force, but everyone going to the worlds has booked their plane tickets now (on the basis of the decision to make Warwick optional) so it's a bit late to change things....
As a matter of personal interest, does this affect Warwick costs for everyone else going?
