Subject: Georgi Dimitrov

Georgi Dimitrov was born on 18 June 1882, in Bulgaria, and died on 2 July 1949. At age 15 he joined the revolutionary workers movement. Under the leadership of Dimitrov, the Bulgarian Communist Party joined the Communist International in 1919, two years after the Great October Socialist Revolution in the Soviet Union.

In 1923, the Bulgarian government became openly fascist. Dimitrov took the lead in leading a workers uprising. The workers were crushed and Dimitrov went into exile to become one of the organizers of the international struggle against fascism.

In 1935, Dimitrov was arrested by Hitler's Gestapo and placed on trial on the false charge of having organized the burning of Reichstag - the German parliament building. Millions of Communists and workers around the world believed that Dimitrov was doomed. But, with immense courage, Dimitrov turned the tables on the Nazis and became their accuser. His heroic stand won him worldwide support and the Nazis were forced to release him.

It was Dimitrov, at the Seventh Congress of the Communist International, in 1935, who elaborated the classic definition of fascism. "Fascism," he said, "is the open dictatorship of the most reactionary, the most chauvinistic, the most imperialistic elements of the financial oligarchy. Fascism is not a power standing above classes, and it is not a power of the petty bourgeoisie and lumpenproletariat over the financial oligarchy. Fascism is the power of the financial oligarchy itself." The solution, according to Dimitrov, is a united front of the international working class and its allies.

Dimitrov's Report to the Communist International is available in English as Against Fascism and War, and is an indispensible book for today's anti-fascist and anti-racist struggle.
