More in depth for jam and tsc due to DM's direct involvment. some interesting obervations about nieve management by JW especially during the later half of TSC. A side of the break up of the jam that wasn't well known, and how very nasty it could have turned out, and how cynically done it was anyway. Want to know anymore? -- bookworm, 15:53:58 08/28/06 Mon

[> My comments on book so far (I got a bit annoyed with the layout and content) -- .., 16:38:20 09/15/06 Fri

Hi. Got a copy. Not read it all, but a fair part. Maybe my comments are premature, but … the book is really annoying me (ignoring typos and grammar which don’t bother me much)!

Some parts are interesting but there is so much double up of personal views and facts. Because the book does not strictly follow chronological order, too many bits get repeated in different sections. Eg there is a comprehensive list of all the live gigs in a section at the back, but in the “live” chapters, most of these facts get rehashed for no gain. There are many other repetitions across the books various sections, often quite long winded.

Ommissions (sometimes misleading) eg “so-and so, who sadly died later”. Writing “later” and not giving the year of death, the implication is they might have died right after whatever the gig is that’s being discussed. Would not have taken much research to put these dates in, or not to mention the fact. Have read two of these ambiguous “later”s and have by no means finished the book.

Most of the book is about the past, but references keep being made to the present which will make the book obsolete very soon (eg “who are still his current live band). Noticed quite a few of these which are totally unnecessary for a book recalling the past.

2 chapters on the last year of Weller’s output which again will date the book. (Could have been edited right down to a short final “current” chapter?)

[Drink culture obs – “I never let drink interfere with work” vs “I was so hung over at my desk I could only keep my head down” “so hung over told my boss to f*** off”…]

Nice to have quotes from fans, but some appear to be included for the sake of having a quote. The content of many of the quotes appears lacking IMO.

Am reading it for the personal anecdotes and behind scenes situations – which are interesting to a fan. Enjoy these thoroughly. Would have liked to have read more about PWs personal situations (girlfriends/wives/splits etc) at the times of various recordings as this is never mentioned much and must have such a strong influence on his writing etc. Barely gets a mention here. This need not have been tabloid in nature, exploitative or intrusive, but would have enhanced this read for me.

Although the pictures are nice, I was hoping for more candid “at ease” shots, not alternatives to published photoshoots.

To DM – Thanks for writing the book. Really enjoying some parts. If you do write another as you’ve mentioned, perhaps a ghost writer? a stricter edit? Good luck. Off to read the rest of the book (maybe to eat my words ho hum …)
