Subject: PW - The Forum 6th December - Whitey takes centre stage and sings Blue Moon

I kid you not, two thirds of the way through the set, Weller sitting at
the keys, clearly hammered says "f*ck knows where we go from here, i
haven't got a clue" then following a brief discussion, and an
introduction of "He's been asking me to do it for 21 years, 25 years i
dunno" Whitey gets up from behind the riser takes the mike, Damo goes
on drums, Craddock on bass and PW stays on keys and they attempt the
classic "Blue Moon" Whitey still clutching his sticks like they're some
comfort blanket and laughing most of the way through the song along
with the band, after a couple of minutes and to massive applause he
sits back down again with a "Now you know why he doesn't sing" from PW.

The rest of the set was fantastic, i must admit i have lost the path a
little this year, hacked off with all the re-issues, re-packaging,
shockingly produced merchandise and tours with predictable set lists
(how i wish he'd play some new songs during a tour) but last night was
very very good - he was clearly enjoying himself and had obviously had
a few somethings before he went on stage.

You know all the songs, the seemingly disliked "Gods/Splinters" was
attacked with a venom and a passion not seen for a while, "Thick As
Thieves" and "Running On The Spot" were belted out like he was a twenty
something again. One thing i liked about this gig was the pace was
unrelenting really, there was no middle section where sometimes even i
get a little bored - he only played a couple of the slower
ones "Pebble" and "Broken Stones" was about it.

Nothing from "Illumination" or "Studio 150" he took the lead from the
radio stations of the UK and didn't play "Wild Blue Yonder" thankfully
left out "You Do"...." but did play "Pictures on my wall" "Above the
clouds" and started off with 5 of the first 6 songs being singles, i'm
sure from your own experiences you can put together the rest of the set
list.

It was a really good gig last night, he was in his element, repeatedly
thanked the crowd, sparked up when the crowd continued "Thats
Entertainment" after the band had finished

Just two small gripes though, i know he hasn't done it for a long time
however i wish he would play some new songs in his set - he must have
some written - just include it - those non fans won't notice it, just
think its another album track and the fans like us will appreciate it
for what it is - what do you all think it is, confidence?

And the other is the merchandise, for a style icon - he chooses some
shocking tat to sell at the stalls, the tour t-shirts had about as much
class as a shell suit.

One small aside, the Weller album that has had more plays than any this
year is "Studio 150" which i never would have believed when it was
released, mainly because it was the only thing on my phone for a while
but now i listen through choice, what a beautiful song "Early Morning
Rain" is, if you've given up on that particular release, put it on
again this weekend - it's good!

Have a good day wherever you are today

Cheers!

Lee
