Subject: Sad news - Arthur Lee - RIP (from Sky News)

Arthur Lee, the eccentric singer and songwriter with Love, one of the most influential bands of the 1960s, has died at a hospital in Memphis. The 61-year-old, who described himself as "the first so-called black hippie", had been suffering from acute myeloid leukaemia.A Love fan website statement by Mark Linn said: "I am very sad to report that Arthur Lee died this afternoon in the hospital with his wife, Diane, by his side."This is still very much a shock for me as I had hoped Arthur would recover." Lee, a Memphis native, formed Love in Los Angeles in 1965. The band emerged from the same scene as groups like the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Mamas And Papas and The Doors, whom they helped secure a recording contract. The first multiracial psychadelic rock band, Love recorded three groundbreaking albums fusing traditional folk rock and blues with symphonic suites and early punk.
