Sept. 11 event to honor fallen officer
Freedom Run among area races marking anniversary of attacks

10:15 PM CDT on Thursday, September 4, 2003

Dallas police Detective Bill Carollo's love of running and dedication to the Assist the Officer Foundation made him a natural supporter of the Freedom Run. The race, established in 2001, is one of three area events commemorating Sept. 11.

The Freedom Run, set for Thursday night in the West End, benefits the foundation that Carollo founded and directed until his death in April. The foundation helps officers and their families in times of need.

Carollo, an 18-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, died at age 46 in a collision with a drunk driver on State Highway 183. He was off duty.

Freedom Run officials responded by naming their new 1-mile run-walk the Carollo Mile.

"His mark on the foundation and those he worked with is enduring," said Freedom Run chairman Rob Crain. "We wanted to pay tribute to him in a manner which would continue his legacy. We will celebrate Bill's life for years to come while supporting the family of police officers he loved so much."

Race officials chose the Assist the Officer Foundation as the race beneficiary last year because they thought it best represented the spirit of Sept. 11 on the local level. Carollo established the foundation in 1999 because he felt there wasn't enough being done for the families of Dallas police officers in times of need, especially officers victimized while off duty.

Organizers anticipate 3,000 participants Thursday. There will again be a race within the race as police officers, firefighters and others in law enforcement compete for the Fighting for Freedom Corporate Award. A team of Dallas police officers won the trophy last year.

In addition, the event has a Texas country music lineup with the Roger Creager Band, Dierks Bentley and Jack Ingram performing.

Two other area races also will mark the two-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks:

• Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Club leaders will hold their second Protectors of Freedom Fire and Police Appreciation 5K on Sept. 13 at Texas Motor Speedway. It, too, features competition between fire and police officers, who will vie for the Michael Lynch Memorial Trophy.

Lynch was one of the 343 firefighters who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. He was engaged to Stephanie Luccioni, the daughter of longtime Grapevine resident and Lake Grapevine club member Joe Luccioni, who founded the event last year.

The race benefits the Texas State Fire Fighters Emergency Relief and College Scholarship Fund, the Peace Officers Memorial Foundation and the Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation, a fund established to help families of firefighters who died in the attacks.

• The Collin County Community College Fire Science School in McKinney will be the site of the Firefighter 5K on Sept. 13. There will be live demonstrations by firefighters at the fire training facility after the race. For information, visit www.firefighter5K.com or call 903-891-3561.
