Subject: What do you mean 50 miles? I thought it was 5.0 miles :o) :)
In reply to: Lee Miller 's message, "Is it true?" on 15:09:29 03/13/03 Thu

No, it's true - IF it's not another mudfest. It's been quite a while since White Rock 2000, and just another marathon on pavement just hasn't seemed very exciting, but after volunteering on the Grasslands 50 mile course last year, I thought, "This looks like an ideal trail run to see just how far one can make it - friendly low-key fun group, affordable (almost twice the miles for the dollar), beautiful, relatively spongy surface, GREAT shirts, awesome burgers right off the grill, and not so far away."

Over the past few months, I've had a lot of winter-afternoon training time available, felt a lot better and most importantly, it's a challenge that's excited me enough to run a lot more often (just not on 30 degree mornings). I may not make the entire 50, but I'll have a baseline for my first ultra-marathon, following Scott Eppelman's advice and aiming for "the gold standard in 100 mile trail running . . . [14:24 min-miles]" And don't be surprised to see me breaking the norm by heading out for the third or fourth loop with one of those big juicy burgers in hand!

Who knows, if all goes well, I might try to see how far I can go if given an entire weekend at Scott's Ultracentric next winter.

You can't help but notice how much weight Tim has lost - so can you blame me? Thanks for wishing me luck, Lee! I hope to see a lot of RAW members out there.
