Competitors flock to Trinity series
By KATHLEEN OBRIEN

Four races into the Trinity 5000 series, leading contenders are shaking out for the winners' trophies.

Todd Reynolds and Lynn Moseley are leading the overall races, while Agustin Ortiz and Frances McKissick are in front in the masters' divisions.

Reynolds, who lives in Fort Worth, has finished in the top five in all four races for 20 points, and holds a one-point advantage over Conor Gillen and Jose Lopez. Moseley, with 37 points, has won two races, and leads Melissa Carey, who has 28.

Ortiz's two victories have given him 37 points, and he leads Steve Langebartel, who has 29. Frances McKissick, the female masters' champion at this year's Cowtown Marathon, has 40 points after winning three races, and Linda Kelly is second with 35.

The 12-race summer series has been drawing more than 200 runners per week, continuing the trend of a growing circuit.

"Every year, we'll grow 1 or 2 percent, but this has been the biggest growth," said Ricky Cox, the series organizer. "It's been great. We're even getting some spectators along the hillside to watch."

Arlington Tennis Center honored

The Tennis Industry Association recently awarded Growing Tennis 50/50 Grants to eight Texas centers, including the Arlington Tennis Center.

The grant program, which is in its second year, offers matching advertising and promotional dollars from the TIA and the United States Tennis Association to tennis centers that wish to attract adult players to the game. For more tennis information, go to www.usta.com.

Second freedom run planned

In its first running last September, the Protectors of Freedom 5K raised $11,500 for the Michael Lynch Foundation, a fund formed to assist families of firefighters who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. This year, race organizers hope to do even more.

This year's run will be Sept. 13 at Texas Motor Speedway. Race organizers are looking for sponsors and volunteers to help the race exceed last year's success.

Race director Joe Luccioni, a longtime member of the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Club, began the race in memory of his daughter's fiancé, Michael Lynch, a firefighter who was killed in the World Trade Center attacks.

In addition to the Michael Lynch Foundation, the Peace Officers Memorial Foundation and the Texas State Firefighters Emergency Relief and College Scholarship Fund will be beneficiaries of the race.

For more information about the race or to become a sponsor, call Luccioni at (817) 251-9311.
