The Fort Worth Cowtown Marathon is moving from the Stockyards to Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth for the February 2004 event. Three new courses will therefore have to be mapped out, approved by our Board, certified, and cleared by the City and Police. To that end, I am making public the tentative marathon course I have designed, for the purpose of getting feedback from those who choose to provide their "constructive" thoughts. Those who wish to rant and rave over issues that none of us have any control over might consider another website that could provide a more meaningful response. The opinion of the members of the Fort Worth Runners Club is important to those of us who organize the Cowtown each year, and we want to build an even better working relationship for future Cowtown events. The following represents a brief description of my tentative course changes for the marathon, with the other courses to be addressed in a near future correspondence. The course will start at Commerce and Third in downtown Fort Worth, proceed north on Commerce to North Main bridge. A left (west) turn is made on NW 20th, where the old course is picked up. The course remains exactly the same as the 2003 version until the 9 mile mark, located at Clover Lane and the north access road of I 30. From that point, the course will make a left (east turn on Calmont, and proceed east until a block before Montgomery, where a brief right will take the course to the access road of I 30. The course proceeds east accross Montgomery, and turns left into the back entrance of Botanical Gardens. The course will proceed east through the Gardens and exit through the main entrance, crossing University, entering Trinity Park. Turning south, the course will merge onto the Trinity Bike Trail under the I 30 Overpass, proceeding south and west. The course will stay on the bike trail for approximately 3 miles, proceeding southwest under University, Rogers Road, Hulen, and crossing over the Trinity River at the Overton Woods viaduct. The course will proceed east under Overton Woods Drive, under Hulen, and exiting the bike path onto Overton Park West, proceeding south. It is estimated that we can eliminate the "Inwood Turnaround", and turn east on Ranchview, north on Overton Park East. The course will be the same as the old course until the 19 3/4 mile mark. At the intersection of Cottonwood and Trinity Park Road, the course will make a right (north turn)onto Tinity Park Drive, proceed past the Duck Pond, and exit Tinity Park onto Seventh Street, heading east on Seventh into Downtown. The exact route through Downtown to the finish in Sundance Square is yet to be determined. In a nutshell, the TENTATIVE course will pickup Botanic Gardens, eliminate Hulen Bridge, and avoid some of the more unsightly industrial areas between 20 and 24 miles. The river portion is early enough in the race, when marathoners do not need as much scenary stimulation as in later stages, and there is plenty of vehicle access for frequent aid stations, which we hope to have every mile while on the river. Well, you all think on it, and I will see you at the Runners Club meeting. Again, I emphasize that this is tentative, and is subject to a lot of time and effort. You, the runner, can provide me with any ideas that you have, which is invaluable to me as a course designer. I appreciate you taking the time to look this over. Happy Trails
