Group out to help those less fortunate
Burn victims get chance to canoe, fish, hike and more at summer camp

By KEVIN LONNQUIST / The Dallas Morning News

For the second consecutive year, members of the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Club are running the extra mile for those less fortunate.

Beginning Sunday, board member David Ball and five others will escort or volunteer in a camp designed for patients of the Pediatric Burn Unit at Dallas' Parkland Hospital. Camp I-Thonka-Chi, located in Meridian, lasts through June 6.

The club raised money to help make the camp possible in its Double-Trouble run last October. The camp's agenda is for youngsters who have been badly burned to get a chance to forget about their afflictions and smile.

"You see the [positive] impact this has with them on the first day," said Ball, who is in his fourth year as a volunteer but his second as a member of the runners club. "The excitement is the same and it doesn't matter if the kids are 6 or 20 years old. The attention and love they receive is more than anyone can ask."

Participants will get a chance to canoe, fish, hike and go horseback riding.
