Mills Run Loop Trail to open Thursday
When system is done, 'we will be able to take it anywhere' across city

By DEBRA DENNIS / The Dallas Morning News

As a runner, Ray Harris is looking forward to the extensions of Grapevine's trail system that will eventually link parks, churches, schools and downtown.

"When the whole trail is in, it will open all types of possibilities," said Mr. Harris, a member of the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers Club and a 30- to 35-miles-a-week runner. "We will be able to take it anywhere across the city. It will be a protected area for us. We'll be separated from traffic."

Grapevine is trying to get people off the roads and onto its hike and bike trails. On Thursday, the city will open the Mills Run Loop Trail, a 2-mile concrete trail that begins at Mills Run Creek Apartments, snakes along Denton Creek along Mills Run Drive and past the Cross Creek Apartments, Grapevine Fire Station No. 5 and Cross Creek Ranch.

Mills Run is only part of the trail system. The 800-acre stretch will link parks, downtown, Opryland, Grapevine Mills mall and the D/FW Lakes Hilton. When it is completed depends on funding.

"You can go almost anywhere in the community on a bike or walking trail," said City Council member C. Shane Wilbanks, for whom one of the city's trails is named.

"This gives an alternative means of transportation. The trails and parks and green space are some of those quality-of-the-life things that we think are part of our community and reflects the desires of our residents," said Mr. Wilbanks.

The trails will give visitors and residents access to the city's tourist spots, said Joe Moore, the city's assistant parks and recreation director.

"We look at this as the main spine of pedestrian transportation in the city. Hopefully, people will use the trails for short trips and to get some exercise," he said. "We want people to take a hike."

He said the trails also will help with efforts to reduce air pollution.

"It's some of the shorter trips that cause the most pollution. So using the trails are better for them and better for the environment," said Mr. Moore.
