沙龍（法文 Salon 的譯音，原文的意思是指廳、院。）

the Salon 是法國一個正式（官方）的藝術展覽。在1667年，路易十四世倡議贊助展出法國皇家藝術學院裡成員的作品，整個作品展便在巴黎羅浮宮中的一個廳 the Salon d'Apollon 舉行，the Salon 這名字也因此而來。這便是第一次的沙龍，只限皇室貴族參觀。

自1737年，the Salon 公開於大眾，成為一年一度的藝術展覽會。它漸漸代表了法國的高層文化，是名流的社交聚會，也成為當時藝術家在法國成名的重要舞台。自此，它便反映了當時的藝術標準，既定品味，一種意識保守的皇室貴族喜好，但亦是當時唯一最重要的公開藝術交流活動。

直至1863年，一班印象派畫家（蒙奈、Renoir等）被 the Salon 守舊的評審委員會拒絕參展。他們決心作出抗議，並在同年五月自己舉辦了 the Salon des Refuses（被拒的沙龍），將他們被拒的畫作一併展出。這便是 avant-garde（藝術界的先鋒）的誕生。
