Re: Calvin Johnson....(this one, fixed link) -- dent, 20:27:02 11/16/04 Tue
Apparently, Calvin committed to Bob Knight and Texas
Tech last year (see article 1)....
article 1 link
Some encouraging quotes from article 1...
"He plays above the rim. He's got great range, he shot
42 percent from the 3-point line for us last year,"
"He averaged about 25 points per game and plays
tremendous defense. When it comes to crunch time, he
wants the ball."
But for some reason or another, Calvin did not end up
signing with the Red Raiders (see article 2)...

and instead will be going to SCU, and from what I have
seen around the internet, it looks like us Bronco
bball fans will be glad that he did.

Calvin Johnson! -- gobroncs, 11:00:01 11/17/04 Wed
Holy cow this seems to be a huge signing for Santa Clara! Where was he projected to go to on those prep hoop sites? Was he consider a big conference player? Should be with that resume.

Re: Calvin Johnson! -- JCard, 12:42:26 11/17/04 Wed
He's rated a 3 star player by Prep West and Rivals (3 stars seem rared at Rivals). That is the same rating that Henke had after his stellar senior year. He plays in Division 1A which is the small school Texas Division, His High school has ony 200 or so students and is on the pan handle west of Lubbock. According to prep west Coach Knight loved his defense but was not happy that he talked to schools after his initial verbal. He plays the usuall AAU/Club stuff so he comptetes against kids from bigger progras during the summer. His athleticim and size at guard will be great. Supposedly he's a good shooter (42%) from 3 land.If he can hav e the impact that BJ had when he arrived, with a healthy Denison and maturing Angley, Henke, and seniors like Parham and Mr. Mean Neisen, we might be okay. We're certainly becoming more athletic. We still need another post-maybe Okey will contrbute next year- and more shooting from the outside.

I hadn't picked up the fact that A1 means small schools. That explains things better. Still a very good recruit at least on paper.

Re: Calvin Johnson! -- JC, 18:32:47 11/23/04 Tue
One Summer ranking (Hoop Alliance)had him as the 107th prosepect in his class. While that might not sound like much,I'm sure it's higher than any Bronco since BJ and Brandon Price (80 and 85 in Athlon) back in the day. Updates on him and Sammet will folow as the HS season progresses. No contacts-- don't worry-- just a review of newspapers and 'net sources. BTW, I can't imagine anyone here tried to contact recruits
