Pioneer Press All-Lake Shore boys basketball team, the staff writers are taking it one step further with the Pioneer Awards for 2003-04.
Toughest Defender:
John Burke (Lake Forest) -- Stuck to the opposing team's best guard like glue. Finding an open shot with No. 22 around was usually a pipe dream. If the opportunity arose, he would pick your pocket -- he had 56 steals. He also was adept at taking charges against players of all sizes.
John Burke (Lake Forest) -- Point guard could do it all. Averaged 8.0 points per game, dished out 100 assists, collected 56 steals and picked up 80 rebounds.
At Waukegan: Senior guard John Burke and the No. 1 seeded Scouts came up on the short end of 60-56 score against Waukegan in the semifinal of the Waukegan Sectional on Tuesday. No. 5 seed Waukegan (17-11) moved on to Friday's championship game against the winner of last night's contest between Libertyville and Warren.
After struggling to hit shots for three and half quarters, Lake Forest (22-8) finally found its offensive rhythm down the stretch. But it was too little too late.
"We went out fighting. That's the way it was all year," said Burke, who finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. "We have no regrets. We left it all out on the court."
Another Voice: Mike Weinstein and the staff at Joy of the Game have put together their final rankings for the 2003-04 season. Their top 36-team rankings (teams in the North to Northwest Suburbs of Chicago) includes Waukegan (6th), Lake Forest (8th), Warren (10th), Libertyville (13th), Zion-Benton (14th) and Highland Park (17th). Hoffman Estates of the MSL was No. 1.
Special awards went Evanston's Paul Pryma (Coach of the Year) and Lake Forest senior guard John Burke (Defensive Player of the Year).

Burke, Paxson make all-tournament

John Burke is clutch.
So first-year Lake Forest High School boys basketball coach Josh Grant had no reservations about putting the game into his hands.
Burke, named to the 15-player all-tournament team at the Jacobs Christmas Tournament along with teammate Ryan Paxson, came up with the play of the game -- scoring on a driving layup to send the game into overtime -- in his team's 72-69 win over Elk Grove in Saturday's Consolation "A" Championship.
Burke and the Scouts (10-3) executed the final play of regulation to perfection.
With 9.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Elk Grove's Carnell Byrd went to the foul line. He made the first and missed the second to give his team a two-point advantage.
Enter Nick Berardini.
The LF senior (5 points, 5 rebounds) came up big when he rebounded the missed foul shot and tossed an outlet pass to Burke.
"We had two options," said Grant. "One if he (Byrd) made both shots and one if he made only one."
Down two, Burke knew exactly what to do. He drove straight to the bucket.
"We wanted him to go to the basket," Grant said. "He's a big guard (6-foot-2). There aren't many guards who can stop him."
Burke (16 points) continued to be unstoppable in the overtime. He had four points and two assists in the extra period.
