Subject: Broncos stunned in SLO town... Neisen injured
I was nearly as stunned as the Broncos. Before the season, I penciled this one in the "W" column. This why Santa Clara has a Tar Heel scalp on its wall--you have to play the game and you have to come to play. The Broncos played with little urgency intil they gor behind by double digits. In a game lowlighted by sloppy passes and uneven defense, a couple things seemed apparent.
1. A team with a serviceable big guy i.e. 6'10-11"250 lbs plus-is too large for the Broncos to handle in the post. Phil Johnson the Mustang center who fits the above description, was 6 for 7 from the floor and opened up the perimeter for some U of New Mexico type 3 point shooting.
2. A big wing who can shoot is a dangerous weapon against the Broncos. Nick Ensweiler (Who I believe the Broncos tried to sign a few years back) was 6 for 6 from 3 point land and werre talking NBA 24 foot 3 pointers to boot. The 6'7" Enswieler, who had not been a factor this year before this game was unstoppable because the Broncos could not get a hand in his face quickly enough to challenge the shot. The lads were not quick enough to the ball or in their roatation. Ensweiler was also unconscious.Darwin Whitten, another Bronco might have been , torched SCU for 26. The previously 0-4 Mustangs shot 64%.
All this having been said, had the Broncos come out with UNC, Stanford 2nd half PAcific effort, they win this game despite their match-up deficiencies. They didn't; Cp did and props to them for a great effort.
3.Another disturbing note that made my trek back to Ventura more depressing was that Neisen went down with a knee injury with about10-12 minutes to go. After being fouled on anawkward shot from the left base line, he stumbled and fell into the Poly cheerleaders. This might be a good thing at an after-game party, but disaterous in a still winnable game.Travis tried to get up and get on the court to shot his free throws, but couldn't do it. He needed help to the bench and left the court for a while. He came back with a despondent look and what appeared to be an icebag on his left knee. He is a tough kid and very clever in the post. Drew a lot of fouls and was 9 for 9 from the line. Poly collapsed on his turn in the lane side a couple times, inducing turnovers. His inside game and toughness would be sorely missed if he is out for any length.
Kyle Bailey had a huge game:29/14/8. It is maddening how he can be an all-american in one game and much less in another.Dp played okay but was not dominat . The Poly size inside led to a number of SCU missed shots that would have been made against other teams on other nights.
Hopefully, the Broncos can bounce back from this and regroup against another beatable Big West team in Irvine. I feel better now.

I know that many people may disagree with me. But I have felt for some time that DD has got to go. This season is a perfect example. In the past, he has always gotten the team to rise up against the tough opposition (Zags, UNC, and Stanford as examples). But the team always underperforms against subpar teams (Cal Poly, UC Irvine, Eastern Washington last year). Yes, Denison may be out for now. But the team is still more than equipped to beat teams like Cal Poly and Irvine. SJSU beat Cal Poly quite handily, but the Broncos who beat SJSU quite handily couldn't handle Cal Poly. Basically, SCU has now negated their two big wins of the season and a once promising season with these two bad losses. A loss to Chico State and it's definitely time for DD to go.

While i'm not ready to jettison DD, I'm also frustrated by the consistent inconsistency this team has shown. When they are up, they can compete with anyone.(Carolina,Miss St, BYU (last year's version) the 'Zags), when they don't come to play, they can lose to 1-win-SDU or Cal Poly. They remind me of Notre Dame fottball, beating Michigan and Tennesee, and losing to the Y and BC. Maddening. The two lossess mean the Broncos have to win the WCC Tournament to get in "the Dance".Hopefully we'll see consistency and steady improvement 'til then.
