Santa Cruz boys crush St. Ignatius
Sentinel Staff Report
The Santa Cruz High boys basketball team passed its first road test this week in impressive fashion Tuesday night.

The Cardinals (10-1) routed defending Central Coast Section Division III champion St. Ignatius Prep of San Francisco, 72-40, holding St. Ignatius to just 10 points in the second half.

Santa Cruz, which will travel to face defending CCS D-II champion Serra of San Mateo on Thursday, got a game-high 20 points from Junior Russell and 17 from Cliff Sammet. Chris Blake led St. Ignatius (3-3) with 15 points.

Russell also had four assists and three steals. Austin Swift added seven points, six rebounds and four assists, and junior center Chris Sharp had nine points and six boards. The Cardinals held highly regarded St. Ignatius junior Matt Jones to just six points, containing him primarily with zone defenses.

"Junior orchestrated all transitions and our half-court offense," Santa Cruz coach Pete Newell said. "Having Junior with the baton in his hands is the best orchestrator a coach can ask for."

The Cardinals have been dominant in the third quarter this season, and Tuesday was no exception, as Santa Cruz outscored St. Ignatius 20-4 after leading by seven at halftime, 37-30.

"We were ready to play from the opening tip," Newell said.
