Since a Nov. 13 loss at New Mexico, Santa Clara's four toughest games have been against North Carolina, Stanford, Gonzaga and St. Mary's. The Broncos won three of them, and nearly beat the Zags, who are ranked No. 11 this week. The Broncos' three easiest Division I opponents should have been Cal Poly (3-11 with a 19-point loss to San Jose State and a 23-point loss to UC Davis) on the road and Central Connecticut (losses to St. Francis-Pa. and St. Francis-N.Y.) and Yale at home. Santa Clara lost all three.

What's the deal?

"I can't answer it for you," Broncos coach Dick Davey said.

He notes this team has more emotional highs and lows than his past teams. Plus, Santa Clara (9-9) generally has success against teams it knows well.

"Scouting reports are something we do real well," Davey said, "and that's not me; that's my assistants."
