Sammet cleans up for Cards - Santa Cruz boys turn away Aptos, 72-56
By STEVE NELSON
Sentinel Staff Writer
SANTA CRUZ — Cliff Sammet continued his recent tear of scoring and rebounding Friday night, which to him means something’s not quite right with his Santa Cruz High team.

Sammet recorded game highs of 28 points and 18 rebounds in a 72-56 win over Aptos for his third straight double-double. He had 20 points and 15 boards Tuesday against Harbor and 25 and 10 against San Lorenzo Valley last Friday.

"We haven’t been shooting well at all lately, so that’s why that’s happening," said Sammet, who did a lot of his damage on the offensive glass, where he grabbed nine rebounds. "When Austin (Swift) and Junior (Russell) are hot, we win big and I get about 13 points. It’s just not happening right now, so I have to be there to step up."

Swift and Russell finished with 16 and 11 points, respectively, but the two went a combined 1 of 7 from 3-point range against the Mariners’ zone, the lone make by Swift, who was 6 of 19 overall from the field. Russell was 5 of 14.

Still, that’s OK by Cardinals coach Pete Newell.

"I’m not concerned about the outside shooting," he said. "We’re just going to take our shots and go hard to the offensive boards. Zones open up spots for offensive rebounds, and we do really well on the offensive glass."

The Cardinals (23-1, 8-0 SCCAL) finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds.

Newell was concerned, however, with the Cardinals’ lapses in defense. Aptos (14-8, 5-2) got down 29-16 midway through the second quarter when Sammet powered home a two-hand dunk after Russell tip-toed the sideline with some nifty dribbling near the Cardinal bench and fired a pass downcourt, but the Mariners responded with a 10-0 run to get right back in the game.

"I don’t think anyone has scored 10 points in a row on us all year," Newell said. "We were just a step slow on each possession. To Aptos’ credit, they came out and played hard and forced us to compete."

Russell, who said he doesn’t shoot well on his home floor, expects the Cardinals to iron things out.

"We played kind of sloppy," he said. "We weren’t executing and we weren’t sharp. But we always step it up at the end of the season, so I’m not too concerned."

The Mariners, who trailed just 33-30 at halftime, kept the game in single digits through most of the third, but Santa Cruz scored the last six points of the quarter to go up 54-42. Aptos never got its deficit under 10 the rest of the way.

"This is a tough place to play against a tough opponent," Mariners coach Joseph Smith said. "We wanted to fight and compete for 32 minutes, and for the most part we were able to do that."

Broc Carroll led Aptos with 13 points, David Capurro added 12 and seven boards, and Michael Platero and James Williams each scored 11, although Williams was limited to two points after halftime.
