I just read Ms. L's farewell Q&A on the Bronco Official website; the lack of an emotional connection with the university was manifest. Her discussions and memories were dominated by her time on the Farm. SCU appeared to be an afterthought, a mere portion of her bay area experience. Maybe that would have been different had she been here longer.
There is no argument that she was a fine administrator and a sound manager. There is also no argument that she and some of her staff lacked the subtlety, diplomacy and true love of the mission campus to translate her administrative skills into deep and broad alumni and fan support. I agree (as is often the case) with '66-- there is no reason an AD cannot combine administrative/managerial skill with an abiding love of the institution.
Any involved alumnus thinks his school is a special place, and not just because of its' Sears Cup or US News rankings, but because of its' history, traditions and attendant feelings of community. Athletics are a large part of a School's public face.Someone who understands what Santa Clara is and can be, as well the "botton line" of budgets and fundraising is someone who can take SCU to the next level.

Well said, you honor. I re-read (for the third or fourth time) the farewell "interview" and still get the feeling that it was/is a nice self-promotion thing. Cheryl was/is very good at that ... and by-in-large SCU isn't.

But if you are going to make some noise ... you NEED to make some NOISE!!! .... perhaps the SCU "culture" is not to brag about who and what we are ... on the other hand if you want to have more impact in the world, the world has to know that you exist ...

SCU's #1 major is (I believe) communications ... well from the "press" that we get (not just in athletics) you might not get that impression ... I have often said that the U needs to maximize it's resources ... If I were the head of the Communications Dept (or someone that had some influence over it) I would see to it that every class/student had to feature someting about SCU in one of their projects ... and learn how to "sell" it to the existing Media outlets ...

think of Students covering Bronco sports on the net!!! ... a weekly Bronco Highlight show ... (maybe even streaming video of Soccer matches or Baseball or Volleyball or ??? ... get the computing majors involved ... get the music dept. to provide MUSIC, the business school (marketing dept.?) to help market the product .... (I seem to remember group projects in Dr. Tricket's class back in the 60's)

anyway I HOPE that whoever the new AD is ... that she/he forges links through the campus and allows the athletic dept to be a resource to the academic programs that could use "practical" experience ....

GO Broncos !!!
