Subject: Nice to Know We're NOT a Small School
In reply to: dent 's message, "potential recruit - Michael Roll" on 23:33:14 08/25/04 Wed

Roll said he has received scholarship offers from UNM, Washington State, Santa Clara, California-Irvine "and a bunch of small schools."

In addition to UNM, Roll said he plans to visit Washington State and Stanford.

"I still have to decide on my other two (visits)," he said.

Roll has played varsity since midway through his freshman year at Aliso Niguel. He cracked the starting lineup as a sophomore. Last season he averaged 18 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, said Aliso Niguel coach Keith Barnett.

"His range is improving. He's a devastating shooter and a very good 3-point shooter," Barnett said. "He works so hard in the offseason. He is the type of guy you don't need to motivate, you don't need to check up on.

"You don't have to do a lot of baby-sitting with Mike, that's for sure. I think he is getting better, and his confidence is at an all-time high."

Roll said he has liked McKay's style during the recruiting process.

"It's a lot of phone calls, a lot of mail and them following me everywhere I go," Roll said. "I definitely liked the way they came after me, the hard recruiting."

Maybe Mike should watch Stanford play at Santa Clara (only if he's here for the Concordia opener --- Maples is going to be done "early") ... (I didn't read he had an offer from Stanford ... but makes a visit??)

Excerpts from an article in the 10/1/04 Albuquerque Tribune

University of New Mexico men's basketball coach Ritchie McKay said he stopped recruiting Michael Roll, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward from Aliso Viejo, Calif.

Roll visited UNM in early September but did not indicate whether he planned to sign with the Lobos. He also visited Washington State University.

Last week, Roll's high school coach said the senior was interested in Stanford and was looking into Santa Clara and some Ivy League schools.

Roll and Keith Barnett, the head coach at Aliso Niguel High, did not respond to telephone messages seeking comment.
