Smart cards on the surge in AsiaKaren Dearne SEPTEMBER 17, 2002
------------------------------------------------------------
SMART cards are making greater headway in the Asia-Pacific region than in Europe and the United States, a Datamonitor report suggests.
------------------------------------------------------------
Singapore and Hong Kong are the main hotspots, with Japan close behind.Datamonitor forecasts shipment of more than 1.4 billion smart cards in the Asia-Pacific region by 2005, mostly for large-scale projects now being deployed.
------------------------------------------------------------
"The market for smart cards is still developing and, to be honest, the cards are not yet that smart," it says.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Europe has seen a large number of deployments, but the US market has been slower owing to the online authorisation of credit cards and slower uptake of mobile phones with SIM cards."
------------------------------------------------------------
In Asia, smart cards are taking off rapidly as public sector deployments, such as transport, spill over into vertical markets.
------------------------------------------------------------
"This approach is unique, as deployment is not isolated to one or two markets and therefore grows organically," Datamonitor says.
------------------------------------------------------------
"As Hong Kong and Singapore prove, however, the market for new, high-value, multi-application cards relies on partnerships, interoperability and impetus from banks."
------------------------------------------------------------
Datamonitor predicts the number of smart cards in Australia will grow from 103 million this year to 185 million in 2005.
------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, Forrester Research says 60 per cent of North American online shoppers have heard of smart cards, but less than 10 per cent actually have one in their wallets.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Apart from price and implementation issues, smart card issuers need to find the right mix of chip applications to get consumers on board," Forrester analyst Catherine Graeber says.
------------------------------------------------------------
She points to a chicken-and-egg problem: issuers are reluctant to commit until the cost of chip cards comes down; merchants won't install card readers until they see consumer demand; and consumers don't yet see any compelling reason to switch.
