SMART card company ERG Ltd has won a $US63 million ($104.12 million) ticketing contract in the United States, one week after finalising contracts worth $320 million in Sydney.

The Perth company has struck an agreement with six US public transportation agencies to establish a fare collection system covering Seattle and the Central Puget Sound area of Washington State.
The contract is worth around $US63 million to ERG for implementing and managing the system for 10 years.

Work will begin on the project once all the agencies have approved the contract, with the first phase expected to begin operating in around two years.

The project involves the design and implementation of a seamless smart card system across buses, rail and ferry services throughout the region, as well as fare card and services management for 10 years after implementation.

"The Seattle region collectively generates approximately 130 million passenger journeys per year and more than $US160 million ($264.42 million) in annual passenger revenues," ERG said.

"It is expected that 400,000 smart cards will be initially issued on commencement of the project."

President of ERG's North American operations, Mike Nash, said the group had strengthened its position on the US west coast with contracts in Seattle, San Francisco and Ventura County near Los Angeles.

"When added to our contracts in Las Vegas, Toronto and Washington DC, ERG has made its mark on the fare collection industry in North America," he said.

ERG said its decision to use its San Francisco smart card service bureau to provide all of the required services including card issuance, management, maintenance and the clearing and settling of transactions would deliver financial benefits to the company and its customers.

"We are not aware of any of our competitors having the proven capability to offer this solution to their customers," Mr Nash said.

The contract wins comes a week after ERG Ltd signed contracts worth $320 million with the NSW Government to supply and operate a new smart card ticketing system for Sydney's public transport network.

ERG shares closed steady at 15.5 cents on heavy turnover of 20.89 million.
