Legitimate points. However, imagine a country in which there were no parties at all; everyone was independant, and was only identifiable by their positions on issues. In a senate where this was the case, alliances would form and dissolve, and this would be good because senators would feel only the need to fight for their views and those of their constituents; there wouldn't be the case of the freshman senator who disagrees with the majority leader on an important issue, but won't vote that way because he's afraid he'll cost himself any chance of rising through the ranks or even getting elected again. All the party system does is foster political cronieism; it ran rampant through the Jackson White House as sure as it does through the Whitehouse and Congress today. A system with no parties is probably a pipe dream, but consistently strong showings by alternative parties will force the mainline parties to more carefully watch what positions they take.
