Yeah, interesting piece. One mistake the democrats make is labelling this mythical "christian right." As though religious people are right-wing zealouts and not teachers and doctors and engineers, too. Laboring under this convenient dillusion might be enough to convice democrats that they are the mainstream, but election after election over the last 30 years (with the exception of flukes where a sitting GOP President gets caught in an economic downturn)don't bear that out. Alienating Religious Americans by keeping quiet while the far left anti-God crowd speak for their party doesn't serve democrats well - note to Al Gore and John Kerry. See, it's not that a small minority are anti-God, and a small-minority are religious and the rest don't care at all. If it were, Dems would be doing a lot better. But the reality is a small but very vocal minority are anti-God, a small minority are wacko-religous fundamentalists, a small minority don't care, and something 70 % of Americans are actively Religious, then the GOP can't lose if the debate is framed in terms of Dems = anti God and Republicans = pro God. and that is the context of things today, thanks to moves by both parties. And if future politicians and activists see it that way, that schism is only going to grow.
