Yo, yo! Welcome back JOC. I think your issue is part of the greater (bad) whole of politics and special interest groups -- squeaky wheels (especially the ones with money and media know-how) buying their special-interest group du jour some Aretha-style RESPECT and all that. But what concerns me just as much is the knee-jerk sounding responses, including yours.

This is not meant to be dogging completely on you, but as a general American response to disagreement. It is very polarizing, which can be a great "all aboard" for various bandwagons. But if you don't like bandwagons, then it's pretty hard to swallow. Take the big dixie chick cd trashing reaction in America. Ridiculous, and it doesn't lend any of these "honest" and "patriotic" citizens a whole lot of credibility over the long term. (for example, they are *so* yesterday's news -- do they not see that?????)

If people are going to be conditioned to think that freaking out over any disagreement is a good response, then it's a pretty sad day, wouldn't you say?
Anyway, in summary, I think both sides (pro and con) of this religion/separation of church & state/gay marriage thing is harmed by the bandwagon jerk response we've conditioned ourselves to in America.
