Author: "The Demolition Man" Michael Burke
Subject: untitled (IM)

The scene opens in a room so devoid of taste it could only be in a hospital. “The Demolition Man” Michael Burke is sitting alone in a wooden chair with rounded edges and deep red cushions. He is wearing a pair of deep blue slacks and a white shirt. A matching jacket is hanging across the back of a nearby chair. His head is hung low and his hands are clasped in front of him. A rosary hangs down from his hands. It is made of wood and looks somewhat old.

Michael: … pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. (pause) Our Father who art in Heaven, hollowed be thy name. Thine kingdom come, thine will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

(The last line, often omitted, and heavy use of old English mark a follower of the Catholic faith.)

Michael makes the sign of the cross and places the rosary in his jacket pocket.

Michael: (His eyes turn up hopeful, he looks like a ship wrecked man adrift on a scrap of wood and on the verge of death spotting a blurred object in the distance.) The Lord is supposed to forgive all sin and cleanse a man’s soul of guilt. But what if one has done another man wrong without sin? If I asked a priest at confession he would place no blame, tell me my guilt was unfounded, perhaps he would speak of God’s (sneering) mysterious ways or have the audacity to fault the victim. In the eyes of the law the responsibility falls on our employer if at all. (Seeming utterly defeated and crushed) In the end though it comes down to two men, two eye witnesses, two men to serve as both judge and jury. I have support coming from so many places; friends, family, the law and even the Lord’s word all telling me that I am an innocent man and that I have no reason to punish myself. But, I know that the only way I can forgive myself is to seek the forgiveness of one man.

He stands and walks down the hall. He stops in front of a patient room, the tag under the room number reads “E. Manson.” Mike breathes in deeply trying to draw in some strength.

Michael: Why do I always do things the hard way? (sigh) Just stupid, I guess.

Fade to black.
