With the advert of the computer, we also have a new form of burglary known as "hacking". Burglary is the offense of entering a building as a tresspasser with the intent to steal, comit an offence or damage property. The computer hacker is similar to the burglar. The hacker uses a computer and a modem to gain access to computer systems that belong to others. Having gained access to a system as a tresspasser, the hacker may:
* Steal information
* Gain free use of the computer system
* Alter or tamper with the system so as to gain some financial advantage, such as free access to registered sites that cost money.
* Cause damage to data or a program
* Plant a virus
These acts of hacking can be dreadful, especially for a company that is on the internet. A company could lose thousands or even millions of dollars if their computer system shuts down.
