Subject: Glimpses From The Edge Captures Life In New Jersey

National Reader Weekly - Oct.30, 2002
GLIMPSES FROM THE EDGE, A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
If one could dig up a time capsule in what were the suburbs of Newark a hundred years from now, they would most likely find a copy of Glimpses From The Edge by Dan Bruder. This book is a collection of his memoirs gathered from a wide range of experiences over the last half of a century growing up and living in Northern New Jersey. If the book was an attempt to chronicle the times, it would have failed, but the fact that it is one man's honest recollection of his little slice of a time gone by makes it personal and believable. He drags the reader through his high school life during the Vietnam Conflict, which includes his self-indulgances, attempt at stardom and his employment calamities. Even though the motive is to tell his tale, he inadvertently paints a vivid picture of the era. As he ages, and attempts to mature, he is faced with issues of parenting, marriage, illness and financial challenges. As he put it, "To those of us who lived through those times it is memories and to those who are younger it is important history." Uncork this bottle and see what flows out, it is worth it.
