there are some problems, but you haven't been to any major tournaments yet so your misunderstandings are to be expected. here are my suggestions:
-check the ruleset for MELEE-FC, a big tournament the indiana guys are planning for the summer. it's one of the best and least controversial rulesets yet.
<a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32687">http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32687</a>
-definitely have an entry fee of at least $5 and give out cold hard cash to the winners. it's pretty much standard. at EB i got a gift certificate for $50 that i had to use right away on mario golf, which we never play. it would have been nice to be able to get cash to spend on something else later.
-lots of setups (tv + gamecube) is the most important thing, make sure the room has that. i suggest at least 7 TVs, grid and i can provide one apiece. it's cool to have big TVs, but quantity is more important than quality here, so we just need to get whatever we can.
-signing up in groups of friends is probably a good idea, sometimes in major tourneys the seeding is done by region. FC will have round-robin seeding, but it takes a long time so we don't need to.
-pay attention to the stages/items settings for FC. FoB (west lafayette tourney) had very limited stage selection and people were generally not pleased with that, and FoBII will use the FC stage rules. trust me, there's been tons of debate on which stages are fair and only the ones banned in FC are unfair.
-do NOT restrict people to one character, no one is gonna come from chicago or indiana for that. if someone uses my countercharacter and i can't switch, i'm fucked, and i don't wanna be fucked my friend. being able to switch is very important.
-make matches best 2 of 3. if there's only one round per match and i get battlefield against marth, again i'm fucked. i need to be able to counter-pick a stage for the next battle. 4 stock would be sufficient, although 5 is better.
so that's my suggestions. i've been to big tournaments so i know what i'm talkin about, and i know that if you stick with this stuff you'll get attendence from some good players. definitely chicago, maybe indiana, and if we're lucky ohio has some great players as well. take care of the room my man, and do some advertising, and chris and i can take care of running this thing once we get it started.
i'll post a topic on smashboards, and maybe the best way to determine the date is to suggest april 3rd as well as a week before that and see which is best for travelers. definitely go with saturday, and since the chicago guys want to do some bar-hopping afterward (so chris tells me), you guys who live on campus will have to house them for the night. i can possibly house people who don't intend to do that.
if there's anything about the rules to which you are absolutely opposed, let me know right quick, but just remember that i know what the major players like and that should be your top concern. i'll post a topic at smashboards as soon as you get back to me.
