You got it? ace. glad u like. I dont aactually have 1 myself! must sort that out.
Yes Andy, he was inspiring to be with. story goes, he put himself up for production at the same time as 'mad profeesor' the dub guy. I was really into him so was going that way. So Andy came round to my old flat in peckham. Coincidently on the other side of 'peckham rye' from were I live now. Rather than talk we got down to making some music. On my portastudio. was a piece called 'Hazel Dene shes my disco queen'. k? heh. Was a disco jam taking the piss outta that. Quite good funny little piece. If it exsists, prolly does still, itll be on a cassette someplace. In the making of that ditty it became clear we should work with him. Simon, myself and Andy on that. I dont actually remember but, I would expect Andy came down to a rehearsal or two. We recorded Move me in a studio in Ascot London. Andy understood well my ideas about dynamics and i remember very well when we recorded the backing track to Steady steady with Andy literally conducting. louder louder louder, quieter quieter. Using his hands. It was a tune about driving at night at that point. I cant remember too much about 'move me'. heh how bout that. Blank hole in my head about most of it. except i remember the casio part at the end. that mad sound on the record. I did that with the casio going through all kinds of processing. In fact i think i played all the keys on that one. At that time I could play bass better than Frank..not any more, hes wupped me now, Andy refused to let me do it. Frank is the man he said. I like the plectrum sound he gets. So Frank recorded it. n1. We didnt use any technology on move me for time keeping. Possibly click track but i notice the record moves the tempo so prolly just did a few takes and took the best.
On Steady steady though, Andy came up with the idea for the 'aah' vocal. It was real spooky. One reason I remember little is a relative was going into the last bit of dying in st thomas's hospital. So I was regularly visiting that. Was pretty stirred up by it. I do remember coming back to the studio and finsihing up move me. But steady teady had to be done before the night was through.
On that day Jackie died. I witnessed the whole thing. Thats right, did move me vocal then had to spped to the hospital. I came back really rattled. However all the others, who'd finished their parts, they were partying down.
So, I thought what the hell. I joined in. Started hitting a bottle of whiskey and gulped a whole load of mushrooms. Oh jeesus. I got really twisted. So I get the call from Andy to go in the studio and finish Steady. oops! well, I didnt really want him to know i was off my tree so I pretended to be a pro. Kept my whiskey breath away from him. Went to the mic, he said 'ok lets do a quick level check'. played the tape. the musc started. I dont know what happened. My mouth was no longer in my control. I was staring at a sheet of lyrics but my immediate feelings were coming out my mouth. 'this is a song about jacky...'. woooh. so it finished, I thought it was a test take. No one said anything to me. silence . oh. I thought, netter go in there see whats going on.
Did, as i enetered the control room, I was saying heh sorry about that, are we ready? lets go do it'. Andy wouldnt look me in the eye. He was completely spooked. His hair was on end. I felt ok after that take. got it all out. Andy said "Im going to bed, Im taking this tape with me, you are not going anywhere near it!'. haha drama queen! I thought. Well, a few hours later 4am I was sobbing on the end of his bed, er naked by coincidence and Andy was really kind to me letting me talk the poisin out. Nothing wierd there, i just got too upset to sleep and didnt actually realised i had no clothes on. Id never ever seen anyone die before and it was not pleasant.
We also did well well well and cold inside together. Both involved technological vandalisation. tapes being yanked about, backwards stuff, linn drum! brand new then, sampling. Prmitive by todays standards.
I said something in the end that pissed Andy off, cant remember what but Ive a habit of doing that. However, although we really loved Andy P, he was great for us, the recud company was looking for top ten type sound. yuk. So we kinda had to move on to another producer. No choice there. people to this day say 'Giant was the best album'. Im like..bollox no it wasnt.ha.
