Hi Damien,

When did you last see the wheel and other wreckage that has gone? I'm asking as there has been a spate of looting from sites in North,Mid and South Wales over the past two years, the supercharger and other parts have been removed from the F5-E Lightning on Plynlimon, last year the crash site of the B17 on Craig Cwm Llwyd was dug twice, the sites on the Arrans have had a lot of parts removed and now MF509.

I had a lot to do with ensuring that the crash site of MF509 was protected as there was a "recovery group" who wanted to completely clear the site a few years ago but due to the extent of protest by local people this was stopped.

The BAAC are not blameless when it comes to sites being looted, many people do not realise that in addition to Aviation Archaeologist magazine they also publish another report which is given to members only and this lists what individual groups have been doing and there are often reports by groups who have carried out "digs" without MOD or landowners permission. I get passed these reports by a friend who is a BAAC member who disagrees with the "smash and grab" attitude of many BAAC members.

Matt.
