“SHOPGIRL”, a new romantic comedy from Touchstone, is now casting many roles for production in late October.
WHO’S INVOLVED: “Shopgirl” will star Steve Martin and Claire Danes, and is being adapted from a novel by Steve Martin himself. The film will be directed by Anand Tucker (“Hilary and Jackie”).
PLOT SYNOPSIS: The film is a quirky romantic comedy about an aspiring artist named Mirabelle (Danes) who works at an unfulfilling job at the Neiman Marcus department store in Beverly Hills. She also feels bored in her relationship with a struggling musician named Jeremy.
Then she suddenly falls for a rich, divorced older man named Ray (Martin). As Mirabelle begins to date Ray, she has to make a choice between her two suitors.
Production begins on October 13, 2003.

“Jeremy”, Caucasian, 20s - 30s. He is the initial love interest of the Claire Danes character. He’s nice-looking and friendly most of the time, but he is a confused, comical, unfocused guy. Mirabelle meets Jeremy early in the film, but it is not until the end that they fall in love, or something close to it. LEAD ROLE
“Mr. Agasa”, Caucasian, 40s - 50s. Mirabelle's stern and uptight boss at Neiman Marcus.
“Shrink”, any ethnicity, 30s - 40s. A well-meaning but sometimes distant Beverly Hills psychiatrist.
“Business Man”, any ethnicity, 30s - 40s. Well-groomed and conservatively-dressed yuppie type.
“Del Rey”, Latino, 20s. Mirabelle’s trendy new friend.
“Maitre 'D”, any ethnicity, 20s - 30s. A clean-cut, hip L.A. waiter.
“Clerk”, any ethnicity, 20s. An overworked and moody young store clerk.
“Valet”, any ethnicity, 20s - 30s. Polished and smooth, works at an upscale L.A. restaurant.
Female Roles for this Film:
“Lisa Cramer”, Caucasian, 20s - 30s. She is a gorgeous salesgirl at Neiman's, as vain and manipulative as she is beautiful. Lisa is stunning and clever, warm and pleasant on the outside but on the inside a very crafty and calculating femme fatale. LEAD ROLE
“Christie Richards”, Caucasian, 20s - 30s She’s the ex-girlfriend of Steve Martin’s character. The attractive and alluring Christie is intent on seducing him and gettting him back.
“Girlfriend”, any ethnicity, 20s - 30s. A flirtatious and cute woman that Steve Martin’s character dates briefly after Mirabelle. She has one nice scene.
“Seamstress”, any ethnicity, 20s - 30s. A hard-working and honest working-class woman.
“Customer”, any ethnicity, mid 30s - 50s. A wealthy, short-tempered Beverly Hills woman who shops at Neiman Marcus.
