QUAKER ACTIVIST SPEAKS ABOUT EXPERIENCES IN IRAQ
Jane MacKay Wright of Providence Bay, Ontario, will be speaking at Malaspina
University College, Bldg 356, Room 111 on Wednesday, March 5 at 7pm about
her experiences as one of two Canadians on a recent Christian Peacemaker
Team delegation to Iraq.
From October 23 to November 5, 2002, Wright travelled to Iraq where she
stood in witness against the U.S. plans for war in the region by being
present with ordinary Iraqi men, women and children as well as government
and United Nations officials. Wright visited Iraq's capital city Baghdad and
also Basra in the U.S./U.K. designated "no-fly" zone.
Jane MacKay Wright is a grandmother and former professor of Media Arts at
Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. She is an active Quaker and has
represented Canadian Friends on the Board of Directors of Project
Ploughshares.
Christian Peacemaker Teams is an initiative of Mennonites, Church of the
Brethren and Quakers, with support and participation from Catholic and a
number of Protestant denominations. Its mission is to reduce violence and
promote the resolution of conflict through nonviolent means. CPT has
maintained a full-time peace presence in Hebron, West Bank since 1995 and in
Columbia since 2001, and has sent trained violence-reduction teams to other
areas of conflict.
Jane MacKay Wright's Canada-wide speaking tour is sponsored by Canadian
Friends Service Committee (CFSC), the peace and social justice arm of the
Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Canada. The event at Malaspina is
organized by the Mid-Island Quakers and sponsored by Malaspina Faculty
Association. Human Rights' Committee.
