 I get my slate from customsawing.com, it's cheap, and comes in various sizes. You can get it on ebay also, but it is not any cheaper than the above site. I have used chalkboard slate from kids chalkboards, and ground the surface down on a belt sander. It's tough to cut perfectly round, a wet saw works good. The stuff that I buy comes from a plug, and they saw it with a wet saw to the desired thickness. Good Luck.
