I'm the same as E.L. a caliper is the way to go. But I also vary the thickness a bit to compensate for the size of call I'm making. A lot of folks bring the sides down to a knife edge at top, but if you're consistent in you sanding of the sides, that's not necessary. Send me your mail address and I'll send you an unfinished side to look at. You can get an idea of where I start and and where I finish at.

My cousing Mickey notches one side of his calls to make the sound differ on each side. I'm like E.L I get better results changing the thickness a bit on opposite sides.
