I suppose you mean carving a checker pattern on the calls. There is a special router designed just for this in which the router is stationary and the table moves two ways.

Most callmakers do it with a high speed drillpress, 1/8" router bit and a 2 way machinist's vise. Drillpress is easy most of us have one. 1/8" straight cut router bit is available at most stores. The machinist vice is hard to find.

I did a quick search of the net and found one at Harborfreight.com for $29.00. That seems too cheap so stop by one of their stores and look at it first.

I usually hand carve mine. But even so I use a router bit in a drill press sometimes in hard woods to make the four stop angles.

Hope this helps and I get more irrate mail from callmakers for giving away their secrets.
