A drill press is better as it's far more versatile. Plus, most mortising machines I've used have a hard time in superhard woods like bloodwood etc. I actually have several drill presses all set up to do specialized things with their own jigs etc.

Some of these thoughts ideas and contraptions will be discussed in a video we have in post production titled "Build a Box Call With Chip Brown" due out early this summer.

My opinion is even a cheap drillpress is better than a mortising machine for this purpose. Buy good forstner bits though, I get mine at MLCS.COM.
