That's interesting! "Oy vey" seems quite similar to the German interjection "auweia!", which means something like "oh dear" or "dang!" depending on situation. After I looked at the definition of Yiddish, I see there's some sort of connection between German and Yiddish, so maybe it really is a version of "auweia" (speak it "auvaiah"; stress the underlined part).
