I certainly qualify as older, don't know about wiser, but am not faculty and don't have experience of American college life, but in terms of student unions, my thought was similar to Sunny's - perhaps some structured programmes/projects that bring people together? I imagine you are unfortunately going to be stuck with the infighting, to some extent; frustrations and anger can turn inward and people sometimes end up bickering amongst themselves instead of channelling their feelings in a more deserved and purposeful direction. That's my impression anyway. But if there are more Union activities going on, that leaves less time for the fighting. Inspiring guest speakers might also provide an example of how achievement is better than infighting:)

I hope you get replies from more appropriate people than me - one person who used to post here and at Indianz com who hasn't been on the boards for a few months was I recall a Lakota who worked at a university and was a student counsellor (Skin) - I don't think he has been posting during the time you've been on the boards. He wouldn't thank me for saying so because we didn't get on, but his professional experience and his own life experience obviously qualify him to give exactly the kind of advice about student unions you are hoping for.

Good luck anyway - you sound a wise young man, I'm sure you'll make a success of that Union even if at times you feel like walking away from it.
