Thanks John. I'm so glad your nephew made it back safely.

This is a complete turnaround for me. I was a young teenager during Viet Nam, and it had a great impact on me. I'm very much anti-war, unless for GOOD reasons.

When Dan was born, a lot of boys were born at that time (1984). A friend of mine said it was because there would be a war far greater than Viet Nam when they were of age. It was hard for me to believe, but it always stayed in the back of my mind. Because of this (and the gang influence around here) I raised my son to value life and resolve conflicts with communication, not guns and fighting.

Over the years my husband would mention the military as an option for our son. This is the one and only thing we ever really argued about. He loved the Army, but he served during peace time. I told him if he could guarantee NO WAR, I'd let him join.

It's hard to believe I'm okay with him joining at this time, but I'm glad it's the Navy and I'm glad his focus will be on rescue. I'm hoping my father will help out as "guardian angel" - he'd be so proud of his grandson ;)

It really sucks being a mother sometimes - especially when the job is just about over.

Kathy
