Tso
My own views on this, obviously, are somewhat irrelevant as I can't speak from personal experience. However I recently heard some more relevant views expressed. On Christmas Day, there was a TV programme in the morning (which I would have missed if I hadn't had a cold and been sitting about more than usual, a kind of sideways advantage to what seemed a bad thing) about a British mountaineer,Chris Bonington, who took a train journey through Canada and combined it with a climb there. (It was a PBS/BBC production so may well have been shown in America at some time, it was part of a series). Anyway he called in on some Cree people, and shared a meal with them. His guide and co-climber was a part-Indian, part Scots man, who works also as a stunt man in addition to leading climbing teams. I didn't get his name as I missed part of the programme. He was talking about his background, and about being "mixed" blood, and said he didn't really think of it in terms of race, more just in terms of who his relatives were. He had from what he said been brought up more as Indian than white, in terms of environment and culture. He was also talking about the fact he was the first of his family to go to university, and that it posed problems because he didn't know what a "registrar" was, and everything was so new to him. But he said subsequently, two of his aunts managed to get to university and got masters, and now teach native children.

He sounded a very relaxed, cheerful man, comfortable with himself. I particularly noticed his comments because at that time there was a topic on the Indianz.com board about being mixed blood.

I could see the point of the story you repeated here, and it reminded me of his comments.
