Thanks, skin
Is this the group you have heard about? If so, sounds like they've run into a little rough water up there at the Big Foot Memorial Ride .... from their call for help they are still claiming to be associated with Arvol Looking Horse, but from John Luke's post [over at Indianz.com] that's not so .... I'm only asking cause I've a friend who has recently met these people and she's going to be very disappointed if they're not all they're claiming to be :o((

Saturday, December 21:
Chief Looking Horse's Support Team Vandalized,
Annual Big Foot Memorial Ride in peril.

Every year since 1996, a party of riders under the direction of Chief Arvol Looking Horse has re-traced the path of Chief Big Foot's people from Mobridge, South Dakota to Wounded Knee. [snip ...] Making the two-week, 200-mile ride, often in sub-zero conditions, is a test for horses, people, and the support team that accompanies them. It is also a chance for today's Native youth to connect with the teachings and traditions of their ancestors.

Saturday morning, the riders and supporters found that every tire on every vehicle had been slashed. The support team is essential for riders and horses alike in the event of a life-threatening injury.

I won't make any presumptions on who was behind this, but I know that Chief Arvol has been under attack for years as a "sell-out" for sharing the teachings with mixed-bloods and non-Indians. What I do know is that there's a self-appointed Inquisition misrepresenting themselves as AIM who are doing similar things elsewhere.

I know it's a lot to ask just days before Christmas, but without your help, the Big Foot Memorial Ride may be cancelled this year. An emergency fund has been set up. Please send help:

The Standing Bear Foundation was formed in 2001. A Cherokee tribal officer, teacher, and activist, Brian Wilkes(shown here with a few close advisors. realized that he needed a way to pursue his goals of strengthening Native communities and preserving Native cultures, a way that would avoid possible conflicts of interest with his tribal government.

With the help of the National Heritage Foundation, the Standing Bear Foundation came into existence, with its business office in Falls Church, Virginia, and its operations office in Somerset, NJ.
