earthw:

I'm curious. Do you know or have you ever known anyone who has said "I USED to have cerebral palsy?" I can't believe soc sec would even think you'd buy that one (brain damage no longer there).

I grew up with a very dear friend who has CP. Both she and her mother had to fight tooth and nail for things we take for granted. Growing up, kids used to tease her and kick out her crutches, so my other friend and I became her body guards.

She's still my neighbor -- like me, her parents are gone now and we live in the homes where we grew up. Her spirit and strength are amazing to me, but she has confided that sometimes she wishes she could be "normal" and weak -- it's not easy being up there on that pedestal.

I used to help her when we were kids. I find it kinda funny that the tables have turned now. She helps me. I'm unable to drive now, but she's able to drive with hand controls. She helps take me to doc appts, and sometimes we just go out for a drive or to lunch. She's given me fair warning though: "You're on your own if you have any trouble standing or if you feel faint -- keep your PAWS off my crutches!"

I wish the best for you and your son.

Kathy
