Very very rare piece for auction. This came into our possesion from a former employee of the original publishing house of "The Lord Of The Rings" who had kept several articles of signed original correspondence from the Author J.R.R. Tolkien to the publisher regarding the gallery proof post-production prints of the book.
In the 2-page typed letter, which is signed by the man himself, with an additional postscript handwritten at the end is dated August 15th 1953.

Tolkien is referring to various 'faults' of the print he has proof-read including to his part where "Nasturtians" has been changed to "Nasturtiams" (which grow in Mr Baggins' garden). Nasturtiams are apparently water-cress and not what the author was referring to.

He also refers to his hand being unsteady due to Fibrositis and discusses designs for the title page, Elvish and Runic lettering. This letter was originally sent from 76 Sandfields Road, Headington, Oxford in 1953.
