It may be too late for your research, but the answer to your question is much too complicated. Charlie was born in England, travelled to the states with Fred Karno and ended up in Hollywood with Mac Sennett and the Keystone cops. He managed to marry 4 times, but wasn't finally happy until his last wife Oona O'Neil (who was 18, and he was 54). They remianed in Hollywood until the FBI took advantage of a holiday back to England, and banned Charlie from the US. He made his home in Switzerland with Oona and their children. Oona renounced her citizenship for Charlie. He did not return to the US until 1972 ( I think) when he accepted a Lifetime achievement award, and he died on Christmas Day, 1977 at 4am. If you watch the movie Chaplin with Robert Downey Jr., you'll see his daughter Geraldine Chaplin playing the part of Charlies mother. You won't truly understand Charlie though unless you see his films. Especially the six reels, but maybe start with some 2 reel films. That's a short summary, but I would suggest you do much more, he led a very complicated life and you won't find it in one book. I wrote a paper on him in high school..many years ago, and ended up with 30 pages, and still left information out. Good Luck!
