certainly Chaplin was married to Mildred at the time he made the Kid. Chaplin had 2 children by second wife Lita and 8 by fourth wife Oona as you apparently know. when he
married Mildred, she claimed to be pregnant, but as Chaplin put it in his autobiography, the pregnancy turned out to be a "false alarm". Mildred did then become pregnant however after the marriage and around the time Chaplin started the
Kid, she gave birth to a seriously malformed child. the birth nearly killed Mildred and the baby died within a few days. the child was a boy, and Chaplin and Mildred did name him, although I cannot remember the name they used. Mildred had nicknamed the poor baby the 'little mouse' and that nickname along with his real name is on his tombstone.
it is said that this tragedy helped inspire Chaplin to do the Kid, although I think he already had the idea in his head. Mildred later said that the only thing she remembered clearly about her relationship with Chaplin was that he cried when their baby died. By the way, just came to me, the babys name was Norman Spencer Chaplin. there is a picture of his grave on www.findagrave.com also a photo of Mildred's grave there. neither Chaplin or Mildred is buried any where near the poor child. Mildred by the way remarried twice more and did have a child, a son by her second husband. hope this helps, Robert
