England's pathetic total on the first day will give an interesting insight into how they attempt to fight back for the remainder of the test against what I'd assume most people would think was a significantly improved SA II (barring flapper De Villiers with the gloves).

However the lack of proper preperation for the test series has to take at least as much blame as some of the rash shots taken on by the middle order today. Strauss' heroics in the first test and battling knocks from tres and butch covered over the undercooked nature of the team. It would be careless at best if England let their record breaking run halt mainly due to poor pre-planning on the part of the tour organisers
