Apart from the fact Toady seems to think your Jaf I still disagree with you mate. His innings on Sunday was a gem, as were his three hundreds in SA. He is clearly a player of considerable class and will undoubtly be a test player in the future.

However there are a number of reasons not to pick him as well. In one dayers he has shown an admirable quality of having a look at the bowling before tearing into it, however with the fields set back and the bowlers looking to keep it tight this suits his style. He is becoming a notorius nervy starter in county cricket with a large percentage of his innings ending before he gets to double figures. In the tests Australia will go at him from the off with plenty of catching fielders and doubtlesly McGrath bowling wicket to wicket at his off stump. To drop Bell would be idiotic, especially given the strides England have taken to maintain a pecking order in test match selection, one which has served them well over the past 2 years, and his excellent test match form to date. Thorpe has a proven track record against the Australians and is a key middle order anchor. Looking scratchy in SA he played two key knocks and averaged well. Pietersen has probably moved ahead of Key as next in line but I wouldn't pick him for Lords.
