Here's the deal with dell cp/cpi/cpx battery modules.

I have had experience with Rechargeable batteries because of my background in R/C Car Racing, where every drop of juice from the batteries count.

***PLEASE NOTE*** IF You are an inexperienced in Battery cell conditioning or if you are not an experienced electronics technician, do not attempt to repair these battery packs. Li-ion Cells, can explode if incorrectly installed or not set up correctly, THIS IS WHY THEY ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.

I usually buy 5 to 10 Dead battery Packs off of eBay (Very cheap!). Like I said, The Li-ion Cells in these Packs are not sold to the public. If you do find a source for these batteries NEW, then you are Very Lucky.

*If you look at the Pack you will see a seamline running arround the battery pack. It takes practice but you can carefully crack open the pack. My first attempt pretty much
destroyed the plastic casing, but provided me with the knowledge (once I looked inside) I needed to succeed at my second attempt. It's easy now! So what I am saying is don't be discouraged with your first attempt, It will be the learning experience that you need to succeed with correctly rebuilding a Pack.

**Once inside check voltages, you will notice that the Li-ion cells are set up in sets of two, that is how you will be checking the voltages, is by the sets. If cells are completely dead, the only way to save the pack is to unsolder it from the board (be sure to label what goes where), & trickle charge (I use a Tekin BC 112c Digital Racing Charger - AWESOME! AVail, at hobby stores), the pack till each set of 2 cells reaches 3.48v , disconnect from charger, Check voltage at each set of cells, They must be within 10% voltage from each other or the pack will incorrectly charge. Next solder board back on, assemble and use clear scotch tape as a temporary,to hold case together. Later after battery proves ok, then you can glue casing back together. Then Charge it up in the computer!

***If you have a battery pack that is fully charged, but dies out quickly, then you have a set of 2 cells that are not within the 10% of voltage from each other/ OR DEAD. The only way to fix is get the voltages close to each other first then charge! This requires discharging/ or trickle charging individual sets of 2 cells. If you find a set of 2 cells that are completely dead, then you will have to use an old dead pack with good cells, take it apart, trickle/or charge to the correct voltage within 10%, & replace the Bad set of cells, RESOLDER BOARD BACK, DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY, REASSEMBLE PACK. CHARGE UP IN COMPUTER!

***CAUTION*** IF YOU'RE NOT A TECH - DO NOT ATTEMPT! CELLS MUST BE INSTALLED CORRECTLY! OR SERIOUS PROBLEMS COULD ARISE! THIS INFORMATION IS ONLY PROVIDED FOR TECHNICIANS USE! USE DIAGRAMS/NOTES to avoid any problems while disassembling & reassembling remember, Li-IOn Cells Can explode, so play it safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*NOTE I EVEN WEAR SAFETY GOGGLES WHILE WORKING ON THESE PACKS, MY EYES ARE OF EXTREME IMPORTANCE TO ME, SO I PROTECT MYSELF ANY CHANCE I GET.

****After saving a battery pack, condition it by using the battery up (IN COMPUTER)till almost dead then recharge again with the computer. do this at least three times, battery should then be OK.

***THIS INFORMATION IS PROVIDED AS TECH REFERENCE, I ASSUME NO RESPONABILITY FOR DAMAGES ARISING FROM INCORRECT OR INEXPERIENCED TECH PRACTICES. INFORMATION HAS BEEN PROVIDED IN GOOD FAITH FOR ELECTRONICS TECHNICIANS AS A REFERENCE MATERIAL.

THANX,
RICKO B.
